Red alert in Kelantan,Terengganu

Flood operation centres have been open in the flood-prone districts since yesterday. The department has also warned that rain would occur in Perlis, Kedah, Pahang and north Perak.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for Kelantan and Terengganu with intermittent and heavy rain expected over the next few days.

“Red” refers to the occurrence of tropical storms and strong winds of at least 60kph and 4.5m waves, which are a threat to fishing boats and
coastal activities.

Rains are expected in Tumpat, Pasir Mas, Tanah Merah, Jeli, Bachok, Kota Baru and Pasir Puteh in Kelantan; and Machang, Kuala Krai and Besut in Terengganu.

Yesterday, some 4,000 people from several villages in lowlying areas in the two states fled their homes and were taking shelter in evacuation centres.

Four districts in Terengganu were badly hit with water levels breaching the danger mark following continuous rain over the last four days. In Kelantan,

villages in five districts were reported to be under 1.5m of
water.

More than 600 centres have been set up in the two states to accommodate the evacuees.

Police have advised residents in low-lying areas to heed the authorities’ advice and evacuate when told.

Residents have been advised to lock their homes before leaving and pack their important documents and valuables
