Celcom celebrates special children

2009/11/05

KOTA KINABALU: About half the yearly cost of running the Kiwanis Down's Syndrome Foundation's home in the city has been taken care of for now by Celcom subscribers who took part in the company's recent charity campaign.

Of the RM217,341 that was raised in the Celcom Broadband Cares campaign, RM30,061 went to the foundation, which is one of six charities nationwide selected by the telecommunications company.

Surrounded by children with Down's syndrome and their parents, Celcom (Malaysia) Bhd broadband and business innovation division vice-president Kevin Henry handed the donation to foundation president Dr Tan Jung Kwang at the home in Taman Milik, here yesterday.

Dr Tan said it cost about RM60,000 a year to run early intervention programmes and other activities at the home that was set up seven years ago.

"We now have 18 children at this daycare centre, and two teachers.

"Our aim is to make sure children achieve their maximum potential.

"With support from parents, we have been successful."
