Top pair may give Hong Kong Open a miss

WORLD No 1 men's doubles Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong, after back-to-back tournaments in Europe, may skip the Hong Kong Open on Nov 10-15.

Kien Keat-Boon Heong had great outings in Europe, winning the Denmark Open and finishing runners-up in the just concluded French Open.

They were defeated by Indonesia's Markis Kido-Hendra Setiawan 15-21, 21-15, 21-14 in Paris on Sunday.

National doubles coach Rosman Razak said their defeat in Paris was because of strain and fatigue.

"It was not due to erratic form. Kien Keat-Boon Heong were slower on court. Markis-Hendra had more time to recover for the French Open as they lost in the quarter-finals of the Denmark Open," said Rosman when contacted in Paris on Sunday.

"It is never easy to play the top pairs when you are tired. Kien Keat-Boon Heong's participation in the Hong Kong Open will depend on their condition when they return to training later this week. I need to discuss with head coach Rexy (Mainaky)."

Rosman confirmed that the pair's priority is the Laos Sea Games in December.

"It is important that they be given ample time to recover ahead of the Sea Games as the doubles have been given a gold medal target in Laos," said Rosman.

On whether Kien Keat-Boon Heong would compete in the Super Series Masters finals in Terengganu on Dec 2-6, he said that they would.

"The Masters finals will give them a warm-up just before the Sea Games. Kien Keat-Boon Heong will qualify even if they withdraw from the Hong Kong Open as they have enough ranking points," he added.
