Police probes "standing" prayer mats case

2009/10/23

PASIR MAS, Fri: The police have started investigating a claim that 36 prayer mats were found "standing" in a surau at Sekolah Kebangsaan Tok Sangkut near here on Tuesday.

Pasir Mas police chief Supt Haliludin Rahim said the police would find out whether the incident was a hoax and would inform the state religious department on the progress of the investigation.

A report on the "standing" mats had been lodged by an officer of the department, he said today.

A similar incident occurred on Wednesday where 24 prayer mats were found "standing" in a surau at Maahad (school) Ar-Rahmah Kenali near Kubang Kerian.

Following the incident, the police were looking for a form four student who went missing when the police started probing the claim.

Haliludin denied that the police had arrested the student or any individual in connection with the case.

Meanwhile, Kelantan mufti Datuk Muhamad Shukri Muhamad said there was no cause for concern and described both incidents as mischief by naughty boys. -- BERNAMA
