KUALA LUMPUR: The rates for roadside parking in KL's central business districts (CBD) will be increased next month.
Roadside parking will also be limited to two hours, after which point the cars will be towed away.
These are among the tough measures being implemented to discourage the public from driving into the city unless absolutely necessary, and to opt for public transportation instead.
Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor said that presently, the roadside parking rates are between 50 to 80 sen an hour.
The new rates will be set at RM2 for the first hour and RM3 for the second hour. Beginning July 18, the maximum parking duration will be a set at two hours.
"If they exceed the limit, we will not even issue summonses. Instead, we will go ahead and clamp or"most likely, tow their vehicles," he said.
The move, he said, was to discourage people from driving into the city unless necessary.
Tengku Adnan said City Hall will erect electronic boards around the city to inform people of available parking spaces in parking complexes and commercial buildings to deter roadside parking.
"We will be very stringent with roadside parking, especially in CBDs like Bukit Bintang, Ampang and KLCC.
"Townships like Bangsar, Sri Hartamas and Kepong are not affected. However we are seriously considering Brickfields," he said.
Tengku Adnan was speaking to reporters after launching a new tunnel at Jalan Tuanku Abdul Halim heading towards Jalan Sultan Iskandar today.
