Council to replace damaged drain covers with pre-cast concrete slabs

CRACKED concrete coverings on a 3m wide monsoon drain along Batu Lancang Highway in Georgetown, Penang, are posing a danger to unwary pedestrians.

As the coverings also serve as a walkway, the risks will be even higher for the visually-impaired, senior citizens and children.

A concerned road user Chong Siew Cheong told Actionline that some parts of the drain were not covered, but there were steel railings which prevented pedestrians from falling into the drain.

“The cracked concrete slabs may eventually break as pedestrians, especially those alighting from buses, use the walkway.

“When I passed by, I also notice that two of the drain covers seem to be coming off.”

Chong said steel drain covers near Medan Batu Lancang had also disappeared.

“It is not safe for the public. I hope the local authority can do something to solve the problem.”

A Penang Island City Council spokesman said contractors would be sent to fix the cracked concrete slabs next week.

He said they would replace the damaged drain covers with pre-cast concrete slabs.

On the missing steel drain covers, the spokesman said the council had installed new metal grilles a few days ago.
