KUALA LUMPUR: The ringgit opened lower against the US dollar today, as the greenback continued to regain its footing, helped by better-than-expected US labour data released last week.
At 9.00 am, the ringgit stood at 3.9090/9120 against the greenback from Monday’s close of 3.8980/9010.
A dealer said the US dollar outlook was also bullish across the board, amid retreating risk sentiment spilling over from sell-offs in global equities and bonds.
He said there was room for the greenback to climb as high as 3.9152 against the ringgit, with 3.9523 being possibly tested next.
Meanwhile, the ringgit traded higher against a basket of major currencies, except the Japanese yen.
It improved against the Singapore dollar to 2.9580/9609 from 2.9600/9634 and strengthened against the euro to 4.8413/8454 from Monday’s close of 4.8565/8618
The ringgit also rose against the British pound at 5.4605/4662 from 5.5020/5070, but depreciated against the yen to 3.5833/5867 from 3.5469/5502. -- Bernama
