KUALA LUMPUR: YTL Power International Bhd has acquired Dodid Pte Ltd, the owner of a 12.5 megawatt (MW) tier-three data centre in Singapore, marking the group's first foray into the data centre industry outside Malaysia.
The transaction was carried out through its digital infrastructure subsidiary, YTL Data Center Holdings Pte Ltd. (YTL DC).
Datuk Yeoh Seok Hong, managing director of YTL Power, said this is the first step in establishing a regional data centre platform in Southeast Asia.
He said that YTL DC would build new data centre campuses in Southeast Asia using the YTL group's expertise in renewable energy, telecommunications, and construction.
YTL DC, founded in 2021 and headquartered in Singapore, provides data centre services that enable agile and rapid scaling, delivering comprehensive customer-centric solutions.
Yeoh said that YTL DC is collaborating with YTL PowerSeraya, Singapore's second-largest power producer, and its retail arm Geneco on green energy solutions to allow the data centre to run on renewable energy.
"This is a major strategic initiative as we seek to expand our infrastructure platform to build sustainable data-driven ecosystems powered by renewable energy, which will help meet the region's growing appetite for cloud-based solutions and services.
"With YTL's deep expertise in key telecommunications and electricity markets in Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia, we can extract synergies from across the YTL group's core businesses to bring cost efficiencies and long-term value to customers," he said in a statement yesterday.
The cutting-edge data centre facility, built and commissioned in 2018, serves Asia's largest hyperscale customers.
According to Yeoh, YTL Power plans to build 300MW of green data centre capacity across the region by 2030, with YTL DC targeting critical hubs such as Kuala Lumpur, Johor, and Singapore.
Yeoh said that the burgeoning growth of the Southeast Asian data centre market amid digital transformation represents an exciting opportunity for the group to expand its infrastructure expertise to the digital age.
He said plans are in the works to expand YTL group's existing data centre facility in Sentul, Kuala Lumpur, to provide customers with close network connectivity to critical internet exchange hubs in the city centre.
