SIBU: Sarawak, which is rich in cultural heritage and rapidly growing in the technological scene, has great potential in the global gaming industry and to become a world hub for game development innovation, said Deputy Digital Minister Datuk Wilson Ugak Anak Kumbong.
He said Sarawak has the chance to mix traditional wisdom with modern innovation in creating games that are appealing to the world while staying true to the Sarawak roots.
"This vision is all about changing the game development scene by sharing knowledge and using the latest technology. Our mission is just as ambitious.
"We aim to boost the gaming industry by encouraging the exchange of ideas, showcasing new technologies, and celebrating gaming culture through educational sessions. This is not just a goal. It is a promise to take the gaming industry to new heights,"he said.
He was speaking at the opening ceremony of the two-day International Game Development Conference 2024 at the University of Technology Sarawak here on Saturday.
According to him, in line with this, the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), a lead agency under the purview of the Ministry of Digital, will support the gaming industry by providing various programmes and grants designed to nurture talent, promote local game developers, and attract international gaming companies to Malaysia.
He said MDEC offers platforms for networking, market access, and capacity building, ensuring the industry thrives both locally and globally.
"Additionally, Sarawak can leverage MDEC's support and assistance by tapping into these resources to develop its gaming sector. Through MDEC, Sarawakian game developers can access funding opportunities, participate in upskilling workshops, and gain exposure to international markets.
"This collaboration can help Sarawak harness its creative talent and drive economic growth within the digital and gaming industries," he said.
