KUALA LUMPUR: With the launch of the XC40 Recharge T5, Volvo has become the first and only automotive brand in Malaysia to offer a full range of Completely Knocked-Down (CKD) plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV).
Built on Volvo's Compact Modular Architecture (CMA) platform, the front wheel drive (FWD) sports utility vehicle (SUV) comes with the brand's first-ever 1.5 litre turbocharged three-cylinder engine with Drive-E powertrain, with an electric motor mounted to its seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. There are five driving modes available: Hybrid (default), Pure, Off-road, Power and Individual.
The T5 twin engine powertrain output of 262 hp @ 5,800 rpm and 425 Nm of torque @ 1,500-3,000 rpm, while 160 Nm of torque and a maximum power of 82 hp is generated from the electric motor, allowing the SUV to reach 100km/h in just 7.3 seconds.
Bearing the Recharge badge, the hybrid SUV has CO2 emissions at 50 grams per kilometre. Its full electric range is up to 45km, with a total max distance around 700km (depending on usage), and fuel consumption at around 2.2 litres/100km.
"We are excited that we can finally offer one of our most successful SUVs as a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle, and thus completing our full line-up of PHEVs," said Volvo Car Malaysia managing director Nalin Jain.
"The launch of the XC40 Recharge T5 is a sign of greener times ahead as we continue to strive towards a more sustainable future and do our part to not only reduce our carbon footprint, but also help our customers reduce theirs as well," he added.
Physically, the XC40 Recharge T5 is very similar to the standard XC40. Volvo's signature R-Design trim is present, with a new charging lid on the left-hand front wing, and the 'Recharge' word detailing across its body. The cabin isn't too different either save for the additional storage space in the doors.
Safety and driver assistance features include a Pilot Assist system, City Safety, Run-off Road protection and mitigation, and Cross Traffic alert with brake support among others.
It will also be the first of Volvo's models to introduce the 180km/h speed limit – a safety decision Volvo made in an announcement in March last year.
"The fundamentals surrounding safety, design and performance are the same for this model as with any other Volvo. Through the dedication of our team, we are confident that this car checks all the right boxes to provide an enjoyable driving experience," said Nalin.
"At the same time, we hope that the launch of XC40 Recharge T5 will provide a more sustainable choice for Malaysians and spur everyone to think about taking active steps in sustainability together, so we can recharge our environment and the future," he added.
Priced at RM241,997.04 (on-the-road, without insurance, with sales tax exemption until June 30, when its price will then revert to RM255,888) the XC40 Recharge T5 is available for viewing at all authorised Volvo dealers nationwide as well as online booking through Volvo Car Malaysia's website.
Five colours are available as options: Blackstone, Crystal White Pearl, Bursting Blue Metallic, Glacier Silver Metallic and a really flashy Coral Red Metallic.
