KUALA LUMPUR: Prawn farmers in Selangor will go online at midnight (July 7) today via a livestreaming session to offer their fresh catch from the sea.
The session, which is initiated by Lazada Malaysia, is aimed at helping the agriculture-based industries bounce back after the challenging past three months due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
It is also part of Lazada 7.7 Mid-Year Super Sale which starts at midnight today.
According to Lazada, the move started when it received news that prawn farmers were unable to sell their daily catch.
So the company reached out to EARWYNN Prawn, a local prawn distributor that works directly with local prawn farmers to bring their export quality, antibiotic-free, and MyGAP certified Black Tiger prawns on the platform.
In addition, Lazada also worked to create special marketing promotions and a dedicated delivery service to kick start sales during the 7.7 campaign.
The livestream session
The special livestreaming session is scheduled at 00:00, July 7, on the Lazada app, featuring key opinion leader (KOL) Abang Brian, who will be showcasing his scrumptious shrimp-based recipes.
On top of that, viewers will also be able to collect vouchers with discounts up to 50 percent off during the session.
"We have had over supply of prawns due to the Covid-19 pandemic and this would have been a waste if we needed to dispose the harvest. Thankfully, with this new initiative we are able to have greater reach to customers with export quality prawns delivered by GoGet.my" said Erik Ong of EARWYNN Prawn.
Lazada Malaysia's chief executive officer, Leo Chow, said Covid-19 has caused a prolonged disruption to the local economy.
"We saw the struggles of small businesses within the agricultural industry, and have been continuously helping them by moving their business online. Lazada offers an efficient and direct channel for farmers to sell their catch and produce straight to consumers' tables, while consumers can purchase at competitive price point," she said.
Meanwhile, Selangor State Executive Council Member, Ir Izham Hashim, who is also Chairman of the Standing Committee on Infrastructure and Public Facilities, Modernization of Agriculture and Agro-based Industry, said the pandemic has brought into high relief the strategic importance of agriculture to our nation's food security.
"It is critical for the agricultural industry to adapt to the 'new normal' in order to bounce back and recover from the toll and impact on our farmers and SMEs. We commend Lazada's sense of civic responsibility in helping small local agricultural players. We are confident this will further spur the digital transformation of the agricultural sector which would be beneficial to our nation's economic recovery from this global pandemic," he said.
Previous effort
In March this year, Lazada helped farmers from Cameron Highlands start their e-commerce journey, by selling fresh vegetables that would have been dumped due to supply chain issues during the Movement Control Order period.
The quick onboarding of prawn farmers is made possible in collaboration with GoGet for delivery solutions. Leveraging on the collective efforts with GoGet that spell 'Kita Tolong Kita' community, as well as its expertise in technology and logistics, Lazada looks to continue this digital momentum to support local agricultural sellers.
