#TECH: Acer offers smaller ecological footprint computing with Aspire Vero National Geographic Special Edition

KUALA LUMPUR: Acer has announced that the Aspire Vero National Geographic Edition is now officially available in Malaysia. In collaboration with National Geographic, each purchase of this special edition laptop will help support the National Geographic Society's exploration, research, and education work.

"Acer has been ramping up efforts to reduce its environmental footprint over the past few years. Born from Acer's Earthion platform, the Vero line-up represents our latest effort. Our research and development team paid careful attention to every single detail of the laptop," said Acer Malaysia's director of consumer business, product and marketing, Johnson Seet at the launch event.

The Acer Aspire National Geographic Edition utilises 30 per cent PCR plastic throughout its chassis, saving 21 per cent in carbon emissions in the production process.

The PCR plastic is also utilised in the laptop's screen bezel and 50 per cent in its keycaps, further reducing the computer's carbon footprint.

Acer's research and development team also proved that packaging does not need to become waste upon delivery—by making the Aspire Vero National Geographic Edition's inner packaging designed to be a multipurpose box—the inner partition can be turned into a triangular laptop stand and the box can be reused for other purposes too.

Featuring Acer's innovative packaging design, the laptop is kept safe in a box that is made from 85 per cent recycled paper, while the laptop sleeve is made from 100 per cent industrial recycled plastic, so does the additional sheet that sits between the laptop's display and keys.

"From carefully selecting materials and designing the packaging, to optimising the internal layout and design to extend lifespan, we believe every small step matters in sustainability," said Seet, adding that Acer will channel RM100 from every purchase of Aspire Vero National Geographic Edition in Malaysia to fund more tree adoption.

Design wise, the laptop comes with several diagonal lines running across approximately half of the top cover. Extracted from a topographic map, these lines divide the surface into land and sea and allude to the impact of global warming on rising sea levels. Opening the laptop, the eye-catching and iconic National Geographic yellow border, which has been printed directly onto the bottom right corner of the keyboard. In yellow print on the spacebar lies the message, "For Planet Earth".

Powered by Intel Core i7 processor with 16GB DDR4 RAM and 1TB PCIe NVMe SSD, this laptop did not compromise on the performance. It also comes with a 15.6-inch FHD IPS display and a generous selection of ports, including USB Type-C and two USB 3.2 Gen1 Type-A ports, one of which can be used to charge mobile devices even when the computer is turned off.

The company has also simplified the process of making repairs and upgrades easier—with just a standard Phillips-head screwdriver thanks to its well-organised internal layout.

Enabling reliable connectivity, the laptop features an RJ-45 Ethernet port and Wi-Fi 6.

Pre-orders for the Acer Aspire Vero National Geographic Edition start on May 1, 2022 at a retail price of RM4,299. The laptop comes with Windows 11 and Microsoft Office Home & Student 2021.
