Branding it like celebrities

Celebrities have taken on the beauty and skincare business by launching their own brands writes Syahirah Mokhtazar

MANY celebrities have turned their love for beauty into successful businesses. Rihanna, for instance, launched her own cosmetics line called Fenty Beauty. Some celebrity-owned brands primarily focus on make-up while others have included skincare.

JESSICA ALBA

A movie star-turned-business mogul, Alba is famously known for her roles in movies like Honey and Fantastic Four

In 2012, she founded a company called Honest, which essentially offered chemical and toxin-free household and baby products.

In 2015, she launched Honest Beauty, offering 83 products across make-up, skincare and hair.

Alba has said in an interview that her make-up routine always starts with skincare as she believes that good make-up starts with a smooth canvas.

One of her favourite products is Magic Beauty Balm, which is a multi-purpose ointment infused with chamomile and jojoba seed oil that can be used to hydrate lips or soften cuticles.

MIRANDA KERR

Before she became one of the most influential faces in the world of fashion, Aussie supermodel Miranda Kerr spent 18 months studying nutrition and health psychology at the Academy of Natural Living.

This sparked her interest to develop her own wellness line. The star was determined to create something that spoke to her wellness philosophy.

Named Kora Organics, the brand consists of certified organic face and body care products.

To source her own ingredients, Kerr worked with an Australian lab and had her products certified through Cosmos, an international standard for organic and natural cosmetics.

Kora Organics offers products like body lotion, body wash, cleanser, hand wash, serums, body oil and face balm.

You can find the products at Sephora stores in Malaysia and on its website.

GWYNETH PALTROW

Actress Gwyneth Paltrow owns a wellness and lifestyle brand called Goop. Her products are deemed controversial, like a candle called This Smells Like My Vagina.

Under Goop, there is a beauty space comprising skincare, haircare, make-up, personal care as well as bath and body.

Its skincare products are formulated with active ingredients and clean, non-toxic formulas.

You can find products like body luminisers, glow kits, cleansers, eye cream, sculpting bars, and even vitamin C boosters.

Though they are rather pricey, the products have received great reviews. Visit goop.com.

KYLIE JENNER

She built a beauty empire through her company Kylie Cosmetics but in May last year, the young self-made billionaire launched her own skincare line called Kylie Skin, knowing how skincare and make-up go hand in hand.

Everything, from moisturiser to face scrub, serum, body lotion, face mask and lip mask are encased in pastel pink packaging. They are cruelty-free, vegan, gluten-free, paraben and sulfate-free, and suitable for all skin types.

JOSIE MARAN

She’s a model-turned-beauty mogul who owns Josie Maran Cosmetics. Fans of the brand will know that the core ingredient in her products is argan oil. Back then, the oil was not available commercially in the US but Maran changed that in 2007 with the launch of her new company.

She was introduced to argan oil by a woman she met while on a modelling assignment.

The model was fascinated by the woman’s beauty as she claimed she was 70 but looked 40. Maran saw what it did to her own skin and hair and therefore started her own beauty brand.

Josie Maran Cosmetics offers a range of products, including skincare treatments and make-up and sun products for the face, hair and body which are infused with 100 per cent organic argan oil. For more information, visit www.josiemarancosmetics.com.

MADONNA

Madonna’s skincare line called MDNA Skin has been available in Asia since 2014.

Encased in sleek black and silver packaging, the brand offers a range of products like cream, serum, face wash, mask and beauty tools like beauty roller and application spatula.

MDNA Skin sources its ingredients from the thermal water of Montecatini in Italy. The company is the only skincare brand in the world outside Montecatini that has the right to use the city’s natural resources, including olive oil and volcanic clay.
