10,000 screaming fans greet 'oppas' of The Battleship Island in Pavilion KL

KUALA LUMPUR: Some 10,000 fans thronged the main entrance of Pavilion KL today, hoping to catch a glimpse of popular South Korean actors Song Joong-ki, So Ji-sub and Hwang Jung-min.

The trio, together with acclaimed South Korean director Ryoo Seung-wan (Veteran, The Berlin File), are in the capital as part of their promotional tour for their latest action flick, The Battleship Island.

Fans arrived at the mall since noon in order to secure the best spot. Traffic came to a standstill as fans filled up Jalan Bukit Bintang.

The mood turned feverish as soon as the stars emerged from their rides, waving and smiling to the screaming fans.

"This is my first time here and I feel so welcomed already. Thank you for having us. I'm so happy to be here and meeting all of you passionate fans," said Song as he addressed the crowd.

"The filming of the movie was harsh but I am very happy and satisfied to see the end result. I'm really grateful to be part of this amazing film," added the Descendants Of The Sun star.

The fan-meet lasted for 15 minutes, after which the stars surprised moviegoers and shoppers alike when they made their way towards GSC cinemas where the film's gala premiere is being held.

Set in 1945, The Battleship Island is about a group of 400 Korean workers who risk their lives in an attempt to escape the forced labour camp on Hashima Island. Hwang plays Lee Kang-ok, a bandmaster, who is sent to the island with his daughter Sohee (Kim Su-an), to work at the mining camp.

There, he meets with Choi Chil-sung (So Ji-sub), a tough guy who constantly gets into fights with the local thugs. On the other hand, Park Moo-young (Song Joong-ki) receives an order to infiltrate Hashima Island so as to rescue a fellow independence fighter who is being held captive there.

The film is co-distributed here by GSC Movies and Clover Films, in association with King Kong Media Productions.

The Battleship Island opens in cinemas nationwide on Aug 17.
