#Showbiz: 'Dukun' to scare New York on Friday

KUALA LUMPUR: It will be Friday the 13th in three days’ time, and New Yorkers are set to be scared by Malaysia’s gruesome thriller Dukun.

Dukun which stars Datin Seri Umie Aida as ruthless witch doctor Diana Dahlan, will be screened at the New York Asian Film Festival 2018 (NYAFF) on Friday, said its producer Astro Shaw in a statement today.

Astro Shaw announced that Dukun, directed by Dain Said, is also competing in the festival’s Audience Awards, where the winner is determined by American filmmakers’ and audiences’ votes.

The NYAFF, co-organised by Subway Cinema and the Film Society of Lincoln Centre, began on June 29 and will end on Sunday. Dukun will be screened at the SVA Theatre in New York.

The two-hour thriller which opened in cinemas here, Singapore and Brunei last April raked in a whopping RM10 million in 20 days.

Astro Shaw’s head Najwa Abu Bakar said the movie might be screened in Indonesia next month.

Dukun which also stars Faizal Hussein, Namron, Bront Palarae, Hasnul Rahmat and Elyana Emrizal had courted controversy after it was completed 12 years ago due to its graphic nature and macabre storyline.

The film is said to be loosely based on an actual incident that contained elements of violence and superstition – the trial of bomoh Mona Fandey in the early 1990s.
