KUALA LUMPUR: The National Film Development Corporation (Finas) is currently investigating the issue of pirated local films being sold on e-commerce platforms.
Finas CEO Ahmad Idham Ahmad Nadzri said that the agency would be focussing on the e-commerce companies as well as those peddling the sale of pirated movies there.
Expressing disappointment at the irresponsible parties involved in the illegal digital sale of the pirated works, he said: "We will be investigating both the e-commerce companies and those who are selling the movies on the platforms.
"We will find out if they have distribution licenses and whether they have obtained the permission of the producers to sell those movies.
"Based on the report we received, they do not have the consent of the producers to sell the various creative works," said Ahmad Idham in a news report yesterday.
He added that Finas would also check if the e-commerce companies involved had any prior knowledge of whether the products being sold on their digital platforms were original or pirated fare.
Ahmad Idham said that Finas felt challenged by the fact that there were certain parties out there who were brave enough to sell pirated films openly.
"We want to ascertain if these e-commerce sites are aware that some of the products being sold there are pirated items.
"We feel we are being dared by this act when they openly sell the pirated movies," he said.
Apparently, several local films including Keluarga Iskandar The Movie and Ada Apa Dengan Dosa were recently found to be sold digitally without the permission of its producers on Shopee.
