KUALA LUMPUR: The 23rd European Film Festival (EUFF) in Malaysia returns with a selection exciting works that will be screened in selected Golden Screen Cinemas (GSC) here and in Penang this November.
Movie-lovers will be able to catch a slate of 17 films from 20 countries as the EUFF shines the spotlight on contemporary award-winning European cinema that reflects the region's diversity, inclusivity and solidarity.
The physical screenings will take place at GSC outlets in Kuala Lumpur from Nov 3-13 at GSC MidValley, GSC MyTown and GSC 1 Utama, as well as in Penang from Nov 10-16 at GSC Gurney Plaza.
"Cinema helps to remind us of our humanity and just how our lives are intertwined with each other. We present this year's EUFF in a tumultuous time.
"We open the festival with the multiple award-winning Ukrainian film, Mother Of Apostles, reaffirming our commitment to
stand in solidarity with Ukraine.
"This movie, like several others on our programme, celebrates universal values of peace, freedom and human dignity," said EU Ambassador to Malaysia Michalis Rokas in a recent statement.
Mother Of Apostles opens the film festival with a story that tells of immeasurable maternal love.
For the sake of saving her child, a mother is capable of doing anything, even going through the hell of war.
Through her eyes, we see the horrors of war, from the life of people living in the occupied territories to lives stopped by the war.
The film is inspired by true events that took place in Eastern Ukraine in 2014.
The EUFF also features an inspirational family-friendly animated film, Even Mice Belong In Heaven, which explores the idea of an uncanny friendship between two animals, a mice and a fox.
It is a story that touches on familiar lessons in life and shares the values about selflessness, generosity and loyalty, all messages that are relevant today.
This fun film will surely bring laughter to both kids and parents alike.
The comedy drama, Doctor On Call, is about a 65-year-old doctor working as a night-shift medical guard and Mario, a pizza delivery rider, learning to support each other and change each other's life for the better in the midst of a series of misadventures.
Eight movies, namely Schoolgirls (Spain), Doctor On Call (Italy), My Brother Chases Dinosaurs (Italy), Goodwill Dumping (Netherlands), Disco (Norway), Catwalk (Sweden), The Stronghold (Ukraine) and Mother Of Apostles (Ukraine), will be screened for free.
Cinemagoers can redeem the free tickets via e-payment on GSC's website and application or the ticketing kiosks at the participating cinemas.
The 23rd EUFF is organised by the Delegation of the European Union to Malaysia, in collaboration with the embassies and cultural institutions of 15 EU Member States as well as Ukraine and Norway.
EUFF tickets are sold at RM9.50, and can be purchased via GSC E-payment at www.gsc.com.my, GSC Mobile Apps or at participating GSC outlets.
