KUALA LUMPUR: James Cameron's Avatar sequel, The Way Of Water has hit another milestone, grossing US$1.7 billion (RM7.43 billion) globally last weekend.
Australian entertainment portal News.com.au reported yesterday that The Way Of Water is the seventh highest grossing film of all time, beating Jurassic World.
The Way Of Water became the top cinema earner of 2022 last week when it surpassed Top Gun: Maverick and its $US1.44 billion (RM6.3 billion) haul.
The Cameron blockbuster now has only six films ahead of it — Spider-Man: No Way Home ($US1.91 billion or RM8.35 billion), Avengers: Infinity War ($US2.04 billion or RM8.92 billion), Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($US2.06 billion or RM9.01 billion), Titanic ($US2.20 billion or RM9.62 billion), Avengers: Endgame ($US2.79 billion or RM12.2 billion) and Avatar ($US2.92 billion or RM12.77 billion).
Two of them, Avatar and Titanic, were also directed by Cameron.
The story takes place many years after the original film. Sully (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) are now parents to a brood of children and when an old threat re-emerges, the family must seek refuge with Pandora's water clans.
