WHEN was the last time you felt uplifted by music? For a group of students, that moment came in the form of 'Luahkan', a song born from raw emotions and a journey of self-discovery.
Recently launched by Empati, a youth mental health support group, 'Luahkan' has already made waves — not just as a song, but also as a symbol of resilience and empowerment.
Empati launched the track in celebration of World Mental Health Day, marking another milestone in their transformative project to support at-risk youth through creative expression.
At TGV Cinemas in Suria KLCC, a remarkable performance took place as students from Sekolah Tunas Bakti (STB) Sungai Besi showcased 'Luahkan'.
Led by four former STB students, the song's stirring lyrics echoed through the room, backed by the harmonies of 30 current students.
Joining the audience were filmmaker Kabir Bhatia, celebrated actress and Empati's icon Sarimah Ibrahim, and the organisation's psychology advisor Aiman Amri, all visibly moved by the music, lyrics and voices.
From words to music
The story of 'Luahkan' started with a heartfelt request. During an outreach project, two STB students, Zai-K and Dek'Ai, approached Empati with a bold idea — to create a rap song that captured their struggles, hopes and dreams for a brighter future.
Empati founder, Syahida Zulkarnain, was struck by their vision and immediately saw the potential of music to empower these young voices.
"We knew this was more than just a song, it was a mission to uplift and inspire," says Syahida.
Under the mentorship of artiste Zynakal, and with support from Mercury Space and Golden Sound Studio, 'Luahkan' went from an idea to a fully produced single.
Written and performed by Zai-K and Dek'Ai, the track embodies the spirit of resilience and serves as a reminder of what young people can accomplish when they're given a chance to express themselves.
The heart behind the harmony
For Syahida, who is also a member of Parlimen Belia Malaysia, 'Luahkan' represents much more than an artistic endeavour.
"This project is a vital step toward building a support system for these youths.
"They deserve more than just rehabilitation, they need a community that believes in their potential."
Syahida passionately believes in empowering marginalised youth by creating spaces where their voices can be heard.
"I hope 'Luahkan' encourages others to support initiatives that address the emotional and mental health needs of at-risk young people," she adds.
Backed by the Prime Minister's Office and TGV Cinemas, the project is a testament to the power of partnerships.
"This collaboration shows what's possible when government bodies, non-governmental organisations and the arts community unite," Syahida adds.
"Art has an incredible ability to transform lives, and by sharing these students' journeys, we hope to spark inspiration and possibility in other young people facing similar challenges."
Creativity as a path to healing
For Kabir, who produced the popular TV drama series 'Juvana' in 2011, 'Luahkan' carries a deeply personal significance.
"There's a bit of a juvenile in all of us," he joked at the event, sharing his own take on the journey of
self-discovery.
"Some of the best stories come from the lives we've lived. So let's celebrate these stories and storytellers.
"Let's grow up together, keeping our minds open to the endless flow of creativity."
New chapter for Zai-K and Dek'Ai
For the song's talented creators, Zai-K and Dek'Ai, 'Luahkan' represents the start of an exciting new chapter.
Zai-K is now training with Angkatan Tentera Malaysia, while Dek'Ai is pursuing his studies at Institut Kemahiran Belia Negara.
Both have defied odds and worked tirelessly to overcome personal challenges.
Their journey speaks to the resilience of the human spirit and the role music can play in building hope.
At its heart, 'Luahkan' is more than a song — it's a call to action, a reminder that with empathy, guidance and a platform for self-expression, every young person has the potential to change their story.
