AI to detect retinal diseases

ACCORDING to the International Diabetes Federation, there are approximately 1.8 million undiagnosed diabetics in Malaysia. It is estimated that 17 out of every 100 individuals in Malaysia suffer from this chronic yet silent condition.

One of the most common complications from diabetes is diabetic retinopathy which is asymptomatic during early stages but can lead to blindness if it takes a turn for the worse.

Early and accurate screening is therefore crucial. In line with this, OasisEye Specialists, an ophthalmologist centre in Malaysia, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with EyRIS Pte Ltd to implement EyRIS's ground-breaking eye screening software.

"We hope to be able to detect eye diseases at a much earlier stage to protect our patients from avoidable blindness," says OasisEye managing director, Dr Kenneth Fong.

OasisEye has taken the step of incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) systems to deliver quality eye care to its patients and collect data to further strengthen current AI algorithms or develop new ones.

Patients at OasisEye Specialists will experience state-of-the-art Artificial Intelligence (AI) via an image of the retina to diagnose retinal diseases such as diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration. This facility is located in Nexus, Bangsar South or at Healthscan, in Cardiac Vascular Sentral Kuala Lumpur (CVSKL).
