Stroke prevention and awareness

HEMORRHAGIC stroke is due to bleeding in the brain caused by the rupture of a blood vessel.

In Malaysia, stroke is recognised as the third leading cause of death and has become a major public health concern.

It is associated with severe morbidity and high mortality. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial.

Stroke affects all age groups but patients who are admitted for hemorrhagic stroke are usually younger than ischemic stroke patients.

There are a few risk factors that are well known to contribute to the risk of developing a stroke such as hypertension, cigarette smoking, chronic liver diseases or ingesting sympathomimetic drugs.

In conjunction with national stroke awareness month, the neurosurgery department of Hospital Kuala Lumpur has put together the Hemorrhagic Stroke Awareness Campaign to educate the public regarding hemorrhagic stroke. This campaign features talks and booths that explain the risk factors, causes and treatment of stroke. Most importantly, multiple ways of stroke prevention will also be introduced.
