KUALA LUMPUR: Perusahaan Otomobil Kedua Sdn Bhd (Perodua) has previewed the evolution of its electric vehicle (EV) prototype named eMO-II at the 2024 Kuala Lumpur International Mobility Show (KLIMS 2024).
President and chief executive officer Datuk Seri Zainal Abidin Ahmad said the new prototype is a continuation of the company's journey in EV production, built with technology developed by the compact car manufacturer.
The final product is expected to be launched next year, with prices not more than RM90,000.
"We created it ourselves from the ground up. The eMO-II has been enhanced from the previous prototype model in terms of styling and features, making it more refined and ready for our future EV developments.
"Thiis is a prototype model, and there will be more features and improvements in the final product, which will be introduced soon.
"This is episode two, and look forward to episode three, where the final product will be priced between RM50,000 and RM90,000. It will not exceed RM90,000," he said while introducing the eMO-II today.
The new prototype features a sleeker design, combining 21st-century aesthetic elements with a distinct Malaysian uniqueness.
The car's design is based on the traditional songket fabric motif, integrated with LED lighting to complement the overall look.
The EV project has been fully developed in-house by Perodua's research and development department since 2023.
Zainal Abidin said although the learning process has been relatively short, Perodua has managed to master EV manufacturing better with the help of several appointed consultants.
"I'm happy to say that we have met the timeline set, and we can now continue sharing the story of our EV here, today.
"We are very excited to share this with all of you, and we will continue to provide further updates in the future," he said.
Perodua is working with several local corporate organisations to ensure its customers have better access to mobility.
"Better mobility means we focus on all aspects of EV ownership to ensure that our customers have an efficient, user-friendly experience, supported by infrastructure provided by well-known organisations in the country.
"We understand that electrification is not just about a new way to drive, but it also represents our efforts in combating climate change by reducing our carbon footprint. We are committed to this mission and will do our best to make it a reality," he said.
The eMO-II is developed using a new chassis, with a driving range of about 400-410 kilometres km), and can accelerate from 0 to 100 km per hour (km/h) in 6.0-7.0 seconds.
Zainal Abidin said Perodua will set up a small-scale production plant to manufacture the EV.
"We will start with a small production volume initially, although our studies show demand is expected to be around 9,000 to 10,000 units per month."
It expects to produce around 500 units per month in less than a year, before gradually increasing production.
"As a national car company, we will continue to use our expertise to produce locally-made EVs.
"Most importantly, the price will be affordable and lower compared to other fully imported EV models," he added.
