TABLE TENNIS: Sock Khim geared to creating history

A CAREER-THREATENING knee injury kept injury-prone paddler Ng Sock Khim off the game for eight months.

The 30-year-old thought her career was over after injuring her knee for the third time last August.

Undeterred, Sock Khim underwent surgery in December and made a successful return to training two months ago.

Despite still lacking fitness, the former Sea Games silver medallist believes she is ready to create history for Malaysia in the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Sock Khim is bent on helping the women’s team, also comprising national champion Beh Lee Wei, Lee Rou You and Ho Ying, win a medal.

She was a member of the team that won the country’s first-ever bronze medal in table tennis at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi.

“I feared the worst when I aggravated my knee. A lot of things were going through my mind as I thought my career was over,” said Sock Khim recently.

“I was forced to undergo surgery in December. I followed a strict rehabilitation regime and it paid dividends.”

Sock Khim will compete in four events — singles, doubles, mixed doubles and team — in Glasgow.

“Our main rivals will be Singapore, India, Australia, Canada and England. Singapore are the favourites as they have naturalised players from China.

“We won a bronze at the last edition and it will be great if we can retain that or even go one step better.”
