MH17: Malaysian investigation team continues search for evidence at crash site

KUALA LUMPUR : The Royal Malaysian Police (RMP) team continued their search for retrieval of evidence in Donetsk, Ukraine, as they were unable to complete their task on Monday due to time constraint.

Its Inspector General Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said 12 of his men left for the crash site at 7.30am Ukraine time was only given less then two hours to carry their work at the area due to security issues.

“Again, there were shelling heard at the crash site but not as tense as yesterday (Monday),” he said in a statement today.

Khalid said his men had found the MH17’s wreckage but no human remains were found around the area.

“Our team found the cockpit and although there were strong stench coming in from the area, no human remains were recovered,” said Khalid adding that the foul stench may have been traces of remains that had been “reached” earlier as no belongings were found.

Khalid added the team would continue their mission tomorrow at the same time and the capacity at their forward operating base (FOB) had been increased from 17 to 20 men.

Meanwhile, Home Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said there were many roadblocks held by the Ukrainian military which had delayed the journey for the RMP team to return to their base in Solidar.

“ Our men arrived at the base around 7.15 pm last night, their journey from the crash site to the base was rather slow due to a number of road blocks they had to pass through,” he said in a statement today after a meeting with the Netherlands Crash Site Commander.
