Accidental art collectors

GEORGE TOWN: AMERICAN artist Tanya Sierra has “lost” her limited edition bronze sculptures all over the city here and is waiting for someone to collect them.

The 44-year-old artist has a passion for anonymous art projects, where she leaves things, walks away and observes what happens after.

““Once you’ve made something, it’s not yours anymore.

“It is a nice exercise to be able to separate yourself and to give things away,” she said.

Sierra studied fine arts in California as well as sculpture in Amsterdam and has been making art all her life while travelling to different cities.

When asked on her ‘Lost and Found in George Town’ project, Sierra said it started in Barcelona, Spain, in 2007 where she used to make arts in different neighbourhoods.

Scattering her bronze sculptures with a poster that says “Lost”’, she wanted people to look at their neighbourhood in a different way.

The artist also wants people to be art collectors by accident.

““I like the idea of anonymity, where there is no thank you, it is just quiet,”” she said.

Using a lot of domestic household objects like chairs, spoons, and cups in her work, Sierra loves the idea of incorporating things used daily that many take for granted.

Ideas of her work also came about from the people around her and authors she loves.

On the last week of George Town Festival, Sierra will “‘lose’” her last two pieces of bronze sculptures, Most Young Queens Have Their Fine Necks Cut and Seated Nude — Barcelona.

All eight limited edition pieces can be found at Mission House in Lebuh Farquhar.
