Shah Alam: A political activist claimed trial to two sedition counts of publishing Facebook comments on the Selangor Sultan's role in the Menteri Besar crisis.
Ali Abd Jalil, 29, claimed trial at the Sessions Court here to posting the seditious comments touching on the role of current Selangor MB Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim and the Sultan of Selangor in the state's ongoing political turmoil.
He allegedly committed the two offences at the Commercial Crimes Department of the Selangor Police Contingent Headquarters at Jalan Persiaran Kayangan, Seksyen 9 here, between 11.32pm and 11.42pm on Aug 18.
The former hotel staff may be jailed up to three years, fined a maximum RM5,000, or both, if convicted under Section 4(1)(c) of the Sedition Act 1948.
Judge Mohamed Mokhzani Mokhtar granted bail at RM8,000 for both charges with one surety and ordered him to surrender his passport to the court. He fixed Oct 8 for mention.
Ali, who is also a part-time private college student, was earlier charged at the Selayang Sessions Court with publishing a seditious Facebook comment.
He purportedly committed the offence at No. 62, Jalan SM9, Sunway, Batu Caves, Gombak, Selangor, around 2pm on Jan 21.
Ali also may be sentenced to three-year's jail, fined up to RM5,000, or both, if convicted under Section 4(1)(c) of the same Act.
Judge Ahmad Fairuz Mohd Fuzi granted RM5,000 bail with one surety and fixed Oct 10 for pre-trial case management.
Deputy public prosecutors Mohd Azari Harun and Suhaimi Ibrahim conducted prosecution in the Shah Alam and Selayang proceedings respectively.
Counsel Michelle Yesudas acted for Ali in both cases.
