Rise in crimes involving foreigners

VIOLENT crimes involving foreigners in the Malaysian Crime Index rose to 1,780 cases between January and June this year compared with 1,524 cases during the corresponding period last year.

Police Social Extremist Threat Division principal assistant director Datuk Mohd Sofian Md Makinuddin said the most committed crime was unarmed gang robbery at 788 cases compared with 780 cases last year.

“Rape cases rose to 92 cases from 70 cases, gang robbery with firearms rose from 67 cases to 86 cases while robbery with firearms dropped from 13 cases to seven cases,” he said.

Sofian tabled a working paper — Foreign Workers and National Security — at the National Security: The Foreign Workers Issue and Current Challenges round-table discussion organised by the National Professors Council and Universiti Utara Malaysia here, yesterday.

The discussion, among others, was aimed at analysing the threat of foreign workers to national security and the role of the government and efforts by interested parties to overcome threats.

The second session of the discussion was moderated by Bernama editor-in-chief, Datuk Zulkefli Salleh.

Sofian said the anxiety of Malaysians at the influx of foreigners had basis due to the involvement of some of them in crime. Bernama
