Make your own fruit enzymes

GEORGE TOWN: THE Penang Tropical Fruit Farm in Teluk Bahang here has opened a showroom to demonstrate the process of making coconut oil and enzymes from exotic fruits.

Farm owner Quah Ewe Kheng said the showroom was to educate the public about the methods of extracting of enzymes and health benefits of these extracts.

Quah said visitors are taught the methods step-by-step so that they can do it themselves at home.

Besides virgin coconut oil, the farm produces bar soaps and hair care products from coconut oil.

Some exotic fruits found at the farm are Surinam cherry, acerola and acai berry.

He said the fruits are popular with local and foreign visitors.

“They are consumed by our visitors and sometimes there is a glut.

“So, instead of wasting the fruits, I decided to make enzymes from them.

“Although it has been a month since we began, many visitors are interested in the enzyme extraction process.”

Quah said visitors could sample more than 80 flavours of enzymes for free.

He said enzymes were important in the digestion of food.

“Enzymes are made up of proteins that aid bodily functions, including the breakdown of nutrients for absorption,” he said, adding that enzymes were available for sale to visitors only upon request.

Founded in 1993, the 10ha tropical fruit farm attracted more than 70,000 visitors last year.

It is open daily from 9am to 6pm. The entry fee is RM40 per person.
