KUALA LUMPUR: Umno president Datuk Seri Najib Razak has stressed that the Sedition Act is meant to protect everyone in the society and not just the Muslims.
He also dismissed notion that the AGM was overshadowed by the announcement on the Act as there were other issues discussed such on the economy, education and religion.
“It is supposed to protect everyone in the law, Muslims and non-Muslims, Malays and non-Malays," said Najib.
The law, he added, will protect everyone and ensure that the society continue to live in harmony without the threat of extremism.
“It is a protection for all. We do not want religious and racial conflicts to take place. We will do our utmost best to ensure that did not happen," he said.
He also dismissed allegations that he was 'held hostage by extremists' that led to the Sedition Act being retained.
When asked whether he was turning back on his promise, Najib said, "I did not turn back on my promise, the law will protect the Muslims and non-Muslims, the Malays and non-Malays, equally," he said
He was satisfied with the topics brought up in the 2014 Umno annual general meeting.
"The issues mentioned such as empowerment of the Malay economy is a good sign for the party," he said.
Najib said that was the right move to implement the decisions that have been agreed during the meeting and take heed of the suggestion by delegates.
