Sea Games: Malaysia finishes fourth with 62 gold medals

SINGAPORE: Malaysia ended its Sea Games campaign today with a second-best ever gold medals haul in an edition held outside the country.

Badminton brought the curtains down on 11 days of official competition with two gold medals, bringing Malaysia's final tally to 62 gold, 58 silver and 66 bronze medals, good for fourth place in the final medal tally.

Thailand topped the tally with 95 gold, Singapore followed next with 84 and Vietnam third with 73.

Malaysia's 62 gold medals surpassed the 61 which the national contingent achieved at the 2005 Manila Sea Games but behind the 68 won in Thailand in 2007.

Aquatics delivered 12 of the country's gold medals, followed by sailing (seven), archery (five), bowling (five), gymnastics (five) and squash (four).

Tonight's closing ceremony at Singapore's Sports Hub will see the Sea Games Federation flag handed over to Olympic Council of Malaysia president Tunku Imran Tuanku Ja'afar as Malaysia mark its turn to host the Games in 2017, the sixth time the nation will be organising the biennial multi-sport event.
