GHB to form new Islamic party under existing political vehicle

KUALA LUMPUR: A group of disgruntled former Pas leaders today announced its intention to establish Parti Amanah Negara, an Islamic party that will form the new opposition alliance together with DAP and PKR.

Instead of registering a new political party, however, Pas splinter group Gerakan Harapan Baru (GHB) said it would operate under an existing party called the Malaysian Workers’ Party (MWP).

GHB chairman and former Pas deputy president Mohamad Sabu said the Islamic movement has been given complete control of MWP and has since formed the party's new leadership.

Mohamad, better known as Mat Sabu, said the MWP leadership would hold an extraordinary general meeting soon to change the party’s name to Parti Amanah Negara (PAN).

He said once the party’s name was changed, its leadership would seek the approval of the Registrar of Societies.

The MWP was founded in 1978 by Ganga Nayar, who unsuccessfully contested the Sungai Besi parliamentary and Sungai Way state seats in the 5th General Election that same year.

Since then, the MWP has been in a period of inactivity
