No MH370 wreckage on island, says Philippines

KOTA KINABALU: The Philippines has confirmed that there is no evidence to back up claims that the wreckage of a Malaysian aircraft had been found in Tawi Tawi.

Philippine Naval Task Force 61 commander Captain Giovanni Carlo said it had deployed a gunboat to Sugbay Island following claims that wreckage, believed to belong to the missing Malaysia Airlines MH370, had been spotted there.

He said the armed forces also spoke to the island’s local community, who also said they had no knowledge of the so-called discovery.

“It’s a big island, 3.5 miles long…but we did an initial investigation with the populace.

“Even the populace residing in the island for the longest time have no knowledge of this,” he added.

On Saturday, a man identified as Jamil Omar, 46, had lodged a police report at the Sandakan police headquarters, claiming that his Filipino relative had spotted the aircraft wreckage.

In the report, the complainant claimed his nephew also found a Malaysian flag and there were human remains inside the wreckage. He added that the wreckage could be part of the missing MH370.
