Parliament suspends Kit Siang six months for insulting Speaker

KUALA LUMPUR: Veteran politician Lim Kit Siang (DAP-Gelang Patah) has been suspended for six months for making insulting remarks against the Speaker.

A motion for his suspension was passed in the Dewan Rakyat today.

Lim was suspended after a bloc voting, with 107 agreeing to his suspension and 77 disagreeing.

The decision was made after a 90-minute debate in front of Deputy Speaker Datuk Ronald Kiandee.

The debate took place after Lim had refused to apologise to Dewan Rakyat speaker Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia.

Lim had said on Monday that Pandikar was abusing his powers by ruling that Parliament's Public Accounts Committee (PAC) could not continue its ongoing probe into 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) following the transfer of four PAC members to the Cabinet.

Pandikar had demanded that Lim apologise and retract his statement against him.

He said Lim had accused him of, among others, "abusing" his powers to "sabotage" PAC investigations into 1MDB.
