THE garbage collection in SS1, Petaling Jaya, is unsatisfactory. Contractors from the Petaling Jaya City Council are supposed to collect kitchen waste thrice weekly, while recyclables and garden refuse are to be collected once a week.
However, the service has deteriorated.
Kitchen waste is not collected on the designated days of Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
At times, garbage is left to rot for days at a stretch and is collected at irregular intervals and that, too, at odd hours. Kitchen waste, apart from leftover food and other wet items, includes soiled disposable nappies.
These items, which are left in plastic bags in roadsides, are messed up by stray animals, which attract crows and flies.
Left exposed to rain and sun for days, they emit a stench. Besides being an eyesore, they are also a health hazard.
There was a ruling that domestic waste should be kept in covered bins.
However, most residents
dump them in roadsides in plastic bags.
Why is the council not enforcing this directive?
Perhaps it should monitor the performance of service providers to ensure that trash is removed according to the agreed schedule.
