Sultan Kelantan pardons death row prisoners in conjunction with 46th birthday

KOTA BARU: The Sultan of Kelantan, Sultan Muhammad V has consented to reduce a death sentence of a prisoner and allowed him to be released a year early; and to commute the death sentences of six other prisoners to life imprisonment in conjunction with his 46th birthday celebration tomorrow.

The seven are Abdul Rahman Ghanik, 63; Mijan Mohd Deros, 69; Mohamed Awang, 58; Rohing Ha, 49; Losali, 57; Zakaria Jusoh, 52; and Wan Yurlilhami Wan Yaacob, 52.

State Secretary Datuk Mohd Faudzi Che Mamat said the seven who had committed offences under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, were given the Ruler's consent following a meeting by the Kelantan Pardons Board on Oct 26.

"The committee members were given 37 cases for consideration but 30 were rejected and only seven obtained pardons.

"It is highly hoped that the pardoned prisoners given the amnesty would use their second chance to contribute to their families, community and country," he told during a press conference here today.
