KUALA LUMPUR: Bank Negara Malaysia's (BNM) governance committee will study all credentials of a candidate prior to electing a governor.
BNM Governor Tan Sri Dr Zeti Akhtar Aziz said the central bank is a solid institution that has a process for a succession plan, five levels down from the governor to the deputy heads of department.
"It's all (criteria required to be appointed as a governor) stated in the Central Bank Act 2009 that the governor must have certain background and certain credentials.
"We have a succession planning. This reflects the solidity of the bank. And I do believe we have a candidate to succeed to become the governor.
"I would encourage the governance committee to convene and conclude on this issue at least three months before the appointment (of the governor)," she said when asked on her succession plan.
Zeti was appointed acting governor after Tan Sri Ahmad Mohd Don tendered his resignation just prior to Malaysia imposing capital control measures.
She was eventually made governor in May 2000, becoming the first woman appointed to the post.
Her current term expires in April 2016.
