KUALA LUMPUR: A non-governmental organisation had lodged a police report against the alleged misuse of Malaysian Islamic Economic Development Foundation (YaPEIM) funds.
National Oversight and Whistleblowers (NOW) director Akmal Nasir said the report was made to enable police to start investigating the alleged scandal surrounding the foundation.
"The purpose of the report is for the authorities to start investigating the claims and check whether there is abuse of power or criminal breach of trust.
"We want to protect the rights of the rightful receivers and also those who contribute to YaPEIM," he told reporters at the Dang Wangi police headquarters today.
The funds, Akmal said, were meant for orphans and the poor acquired from public contributions.
He said the NGO was in the midst of discussing whether they would lodge a report with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission.
It was reported that Akmal, who is also Johor PKR publicity chief, had accused Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Jamil Khir Baharom of misusing YaPEIM funds for a trip to the US in May last year, where the latter and his wife had allegedly gone shopping and golfing.
Jamil Khir, who is in charge of religious affairs, demanded that Akmal retract his statement and issue a public apology within 24 hours. If not, he said he would file a defamation suit against Akmal and an online portal for reporting the allegation.
