Badrul Hisyam needs to improve his start – coach

JASIN: Asean schools sprint king Badrul Hisyam Abdul Manap hopes to improve on his start to set better times in the future.

Tengku Mahkota Ismail Sports School (SSTMI) sprints coach Mohd Poad Md Kassim said he hoped to improve Badrul Hisyam’s start and initial sprint over the first 20m through systematic and continuous training.

“What Badrul Hisyam was able to achieve thus far was through a long process of improving and overcoming mistakes throughout the 10 years I have trained him. We believe if he (Badrul) can overcome some weaknesses in his start, he would be able to set better times,” he told reporters at Kampung Batu Gajah Pasir, upon his return to his village, here today.

His welcome home function was attended by more than 100 family members and villagers, including Sungai Rambai state assemblyman Datuk Hasan Abdul Rahman.

Badrul Hisyam, 18, created history by breaking the 17-year National record in the 100 metres held by Watson Nyambek, with a time of 10.29s, 0.01 second faster than the latter’s, at the 7th ASEAN Schools Games 2015 in Brunei.

The Melaka-born teenager continued to shine when he erased his own record of 21.61s in the 200-metre event which be notched last year, with a new time of 21.39s for his second gold medal at the ASEAN Schools Games.

Poad said apart from improving on his start, Badrul Hisyam must also improve his physical condition to be able to add more power to his speed by increasing his weight from 55kg to between 58kg to 60kg.

“A dietician from the National Sports Institute (ISN) has prepared a suitable menu for him to follow,” he said.

Badrul Hisyam would need more exposure to prepare for the Asian Junior Indoor Games in Qatar two months from now, said Poad. --Bernama
