KUALA LUMPUR: A fire at Batu Caves Temple in Gombak, near here, saw 53 Hindu priests and visitors evacuated at about 5.30pm today.
Selangor Fire and Rescue Department assistant director (operations) Mohd Sani Harul said a souvenir shop inside the temple was destroyed in the incident.
"We received a call informing us about the blaze at 5.25pm. A dozen firemen from Selayang, Rawang and Gombak fire stations, and five volunteer firemen, were dispatched to the scene.
"The team managed to control the fire and prevent it from spreading to other parts of the temple.
"We evacuated 53 people from the temple during the operation," he said.
