KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 2.6 million people comprising civil servants and pensioners will receive a windfall in the form of bonuses and a special one-off payment, tomorrow (Jan 4).
In accordance with the announcement made by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak during the tabling of the 2016 Budget last October, the payout will involve an allocation of RM645 million.
This will see 1.6 million civil servants receive a payment of RM500 each, said a statement from the government today.
Around one million government pensioners will receive a payment of RM250 each.
Civil servants are also set to receive several other incentives under the 2016 Budget.
The measures, set to be implemented on July 1 this year at a cost of RM1.4 billion, will involve among others, an upgrading of service schemes which will benefit 406,000 civil servants.
The basic starting salary in the civil service, fixed at RM1,200 a month, will benefit 60,000 civil servants.
In addition, almost 50,000 pensioners who have 25 years of service under their belt will enjoy a fixed minimum pension of RM950 a month.
Officers on contract who have served at least 15 years will be absorbed into permanent service. This will benefit around 10,000 contract staff.
