No company too small for minimum wage implementation, says Human Resources Ministry

PUTRAJAYA: The Minimum Wage Order 2016 (PGM2016) will take effect on July 1 this year for all employers regardless of the number of employees under the organisation or company.

Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri Richard Riot Jaem said the Act, which was gazetted on April 29, covers all employees in the private sector except domestic helpers as per the PGM 2012.

"The government has reviewed all recommendations submitted by the National Wages Consultative Council and has taken a 'balanced approach' as well as considered the interest of both employers and employees.

“The gazettement of PGM 2016 underscores the government's commitment to protecting the rights of the employees as well as the employers,” he said in a statement today.

Under the PGM 2016, the minimum wage set by for Peninsula is RM1,000 per month or RM4.81 per hour, and RM920 per month or RM4.42 per hour for Sabah, Sarawak and Labuan.

Richard said the daily minimum wage is also subject to a maximum number of hours worked per week; 48 hours.

"For six days a week, the daily minimum wage rate is RM38.46, for five days a week the rate is RM46.15 and four days a week the rate is RM57.69.

“In Sabah, Sarawak and Labuan, for six days a week the daily minimum wage is RM35.38, five days a week the rate is RM42.46 and for four days a week the rate RM53.08,” he said.
