KUALA TERENGGANU: Brightly-lit pelita raya (Hari Raya lamps) have long been synonymous with the celebration, especially in the east coast.
Roslin Ibrahim, 45, from Kampung Padang Hangus has been upholding the tradition for the last 16 years and is proud to be part of the celebration.
“Despite the fluctuating fuel prices, especially the higher price of kerosene, I've managed somehow to keep this tradition going each Ramadan.
“I do not want to use the higher cost of living as an excuse not to celebrate and foster closer rapport with the village folk,” said Roslin, who had created an aeroplane figure, complete with a watch tower, with 400 pelita raya.
He said he used bottles, food and drink cans to decorate the pelita.
Another resident, Rustam Naman, 56, shared Roslin’s sentiments by improvising with coconut shells to form a pelita arch.
“I, like the other village folk, take pride in lighting up decorative pelita each Ramadan as we usher in Aidilfitri.
“These pelita certainly light up the village for a brighter Hari Raya W and even attract curious visitors to our village,” he said.
Rustam hoped the authorities could organise a competition, like those done is other villages, to encourage more village folk to take part.
