GEORGE TOWN: A rainstorm lashed Penang island today, causing the Penang International Airport to be flooded.
No less than 14 flights have also been put on hold following the severe weather.
Penang International Airport senior manager Arif Jaafar said 10 inbound flights and four departing flights were delayed because of heavy rain.
“The 14 scheduled flights have been put on hold due to heavy rain as well as strong wind,” he said.
He said flooding also occurred at the public area of the arrival hall, the terminal driveway as well as the waiting lounge for turboprop aircraft.
“Traffic was backed up due to the high water level at a roundabout near the airport terminal," Arif said today.
He said the heavy rainfall from 3pm to 5pm had resulted in a high volume of water, measuring about 209mm.
The water level rose rapidly from the drainage outside the arrival hall from 3pm onwards.
Moments later, the water seeped from the driveway and into the arrival hall.
Passengers and visitors had to wade through puddles inside the ground floor terminal.
