Info sharing between Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore helped foil planned Marina Bay attack

PUTRAJAYA: Information-sharing between Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore helped foil a recent planned attack on Marina Bay last week.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the close cooperation between the three countries helped the authorities to act swiftly and thwart the plan.

Six suspected Indonesian militants had planned to launch a rocket from the island of Batam to Marina Bay. The six, including the group’s leader, were arrested last Friday in Batam.

Zahid, who is also Home Minister, said the ministry has also agreed to provide continuous security updates to foreign missions in Malaysia.

This, he said, would prevent any possible misconception among the foreign missions when they report back to their respective countries regarding the security situation in Malaysia.

“They (the foreign missions here) cannot rely only on media reports regarding the security situation in Malaysia.

“We have adopted a very open approach where security is concerned. We do not want to hide anything so that the truth can be known," he told reporters at a briefing on the country's latest security situation to heads of missions in Malaysia.

Zahid said he did not have any issue with the mainstream media reporting the truth about the security situation in Malaysia.

He, however, expressed concern about certain media that preferred to sensationalise their reports that could in turn confuse the public.
