RIO DE JANEIRO: A disastrous sixth dive saw Ahmad Amsyar Azman crashing out of the Rio Olympics 3m springboard event at the Maria Lenk Aquatic Centre on Monday.
Amsyar was a comfortable 12th after five dives and with 18 progressing, looked set to advance into the semi-final.
However, he made a mistake with his sixth dive and looked like he had fallen into the water.
It was caused, said Amsyar, by him losing balance just after he jumped but the judges gave him no favours as he was awarded just 9.75 points.
“I knew then that it was over as there was no way for me to make the semi-final,” said a dejected Amsyar.
“I made a mistake when jumping and couldn’t control my dive after that.”
Amsyar garnered a total 341.70 points with China’s Cao Yuan top (498.70).
Second was Mexico’s Rommel Pacheco with 488.25 and third Russia’s Evgenii Kuznetsov (449.90).
Meanwhile, Heidi Gan had to be satisfied with a 21st place finish in the marathon swimming at Fort Copacabana, also on Monday.
The Malaysian completed the 10km race in 1:59:07.9s.
The gold was won by Sharon Van Rouwendaal of the Netherlands in 1:56:32.1s.
Silver went to Italy’s Rachele Bruni (1:56:49.5s) while Brazil’s Poliana Okimoto (1:56:51.4s) took the bronze.
