Autumn in Japan and Korea

IT’S no secret that Malaysians are fans of all things Japan and South Korea. In addition to the pop culture, dramas, traditions, technology and the cuisine of both countries, we are often tempted by the picture-perfect landscape during the four seasons.

In autumn, when the bright foliage and pleasant temperatures become the highlight of both countries, Hotels.com has named four cities which will transform into a haven of red and scarlet leaves. Hotels.com is also offering hotel deals that are only valid for the season.

JAPAN

The viewing of koyo (autumn leaves) is a popular activity in Japan for centuries. All over the country, its people still try to find the best spots to view the beauty of the stunning blend of yellow, orange and red leaves. The season lasts from September through to early November, depending on the weather and location.

FURANO

A true gem that’s located away from the hustle and bustle of the city, Furano holds many treats for the eyes. This month, travel by foot to Tonurima Park, as the marshlands turn into a beautiful fiery red that is truly picturesque.

Rowboats tied to the banks are available for visitors to row out to the crystal clear lake and take in the breathtaking view of autumn leaves, free of charge. Stay at Hotel Sunfuraton, from RM353 per night.

NISEKO

A top destination in Hokkaido. Enjoy the peaceful view of red leaves swirling in the wind, with a backdrop of crystal clear lakes.

To watch the view from a completely different perspective, hike to a viewing point along the many hiking trails. Popular spots are Mt Annupuri and Mt Yotei. Stay at Hotel Niseko Alpen (from RM 577 per night). It’s located right in front of the Grand Hirafu Ski Resort and offers hot-spring baths, a ganbanyoku stone sauna, and an indoor pool.

SOUTH KOREA

In autumn, South Korea is painted with a palette of wonderful hues, from rich browns to bright oranges and burning crimson. You will be happy to know that even the streets are a sight to behold, making every photo “Instagrammable” worthy.

Seoul

When in Seoul, visit Seoul Forest, a massive park with various exhibits. The insect garden, art park and water slide park as well as large areas filled with striking orange foliage, are perfect for an old-school picnic session with travel buddies. Alternatively, take a train to Hyeonchoongsa Tree-Lined Street in Cheonan-Si. The almost 2km road is lined with scenic golden-green trees in autumn, making the one-hour train ride well worth it. Cars are also not allowed on this street, enabling you to enjoy the view at your own pace, undisturbed. Stay at Sejong Hotel, from RM385 per night.

INCHEON

Incheon Grand Park is the most ideal place to view the annual change in colour of the leaves. The park is filled with trees and walkways are blanketed with fallen leaves that make all photographs look like a scene out of a romantic K-drama. When your feet are tired, take a breather and relax by a pond overlooking a vast landscape. Stay at Incheon Airport Hotel Queen, from RM282 per night.
