ALOR STAR: The Dragon Breath cookies which are becoming more popular among the people in the city have scarred a 15-year-old teenager, leaving him with burns on his palm.
Mohd Aiman Mohd Ridwan said he bought the cookies for the first time from a food stall at the night market here last Friday at 9pm. He said 20 pieces of the cookies were being sold for RM10.
Excited to taste the cookies that is said to emit smoke, he quickly poured the cookies, packed in a paper cup, onto his palm without realising that there are drops of nitrogen in it.
As soon as the liquid touched his palm, he felt as if boiling water has been poured on his palm.
Aiman said he still felt the pain when he reached home and quickly applied some ointment to ease the pain but the next day he realised there were blisters on his palm, which was also swollen.
“My family and I stopped at the stall as we were interested in the way the cookies were being prepared. It was fascinating to see the patrons exhaling smoke from their nose and mouth after eating the cookies.
“My parents and siblings did feel a slight pain on their tongue after eating the cookies, which I believed was caused by the nitrogen, but none of them suffer burnt injuries like I did,” he said when met today.
His mother, Nordiana Yaakob,45, said she has taken her son to lodge a report at the Consumers Associations of Kedah (Cake) as she feared that other consumers might end up suffering the same fate as her son did, considering that the cookies attracted many, especially children.
Cake secretary Mohd Yusrizal Yusoff said the association has received five complaints on the smoky cookies thus far.
He said the matter has been forwarded to the Kedah Health Department for further investigations and advised those encountering any health problem after eating the cookies to seek immediate treatment at health clinics nearby and come forward to file a complaint.
“Initial investigations have shown that the liquid nitrogen used to prepare the cookies is not suitable for consumption as it could cause side effects,” he said.
