Abang Johari to be sworn in as Sarawak's sixth Chief Minister

KUCHING: Sarawak Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Abang Johari Openg will be sworn in as Sarawak’s sixth Chief Minister.

The swearing-in ceremony will be held at the Astana Negeri here at 4pm today.

Announcing the appointment today, Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) senior vice-president Datuk Awang Tengah Ali Hasan said the decision was agreed upon by the party’s top leadership.

“The PBB top leadership has agreed to support Abang Johari (for the Sarawak chief minister position).

“The swearing-in ceremony will be held at 4pm today," he said.

Awang Tengah, who is also the State Second Resources Planning and Environment Minister, was speaking to reporters when met at the Yang di-Pertua Negeri Sarawak Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud's official residence in Demak Jaya, today.

The announcement by Awang Tengah has put an end to speculation on who would become the next chief minister following the demise of Tan Sri Adenan Satem.

Abang Johari, who is one of Sarawak’s three deputy chief ministers, is also the party's deputy president.

The Satok assemblyman is set to become Sarawak's sixth chief minister.

Adenan had succumbed to heart complications at the Kota Samarahan Heart Centre on Wednesday.
