KUALA LUMPUR: The government has no plans to amend Section 41 of the Road Transport Act 1987, which covers the offence of causing death by reckless or dangerous driving, the Dewan Rakyat was told today.
Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said this was because the present penalty of a maximum 10 years' jail and a maximum RM20,000 fine provided under the section was sufficient.
"For now, there are no plans to amend the Act.
"However, the Road Transport Department is aiming to reduce the number of accidents by 10 per cent each year.
"Under the Kejara demerit system, we will also suspend the driving licence of the offender," he said in reply to a supplementary question by Datuk Takiyuddin Hassan (Pas-Kota Baru).
Liow (BN-Bentong) went on to state that the ministry's priority was on road safety campaigns.
Takiyuddin had asked on whether the government planned to amend the said section, as it involved fatal accidents.
