KUALA LUMPUR: The police on Wednesday scored a major success with the seizure of 2.51 million of Erimin 5 pills worth RM50.5 million, that were smuggled into the country from Taiwan via Port Klang.
Federal police Narcotics Department director Datuk Seri Mohd Mokhtar Mohd Shariff said the seizure came following cooperation between the police and Customs Department on March 8.
"Customs and Special Tactical Intelligence Narcotics Group (STING) personnel discovered the pills hidden inside 15 sofas while searching a container," he said.
Mokhtar said 10 men, aged between 29 and 57, were arrested in the operation.
"The drug bust is considered to be one of our biggest catch for this year," he told a press conference at the department's office in Bukit Aman, here today.
Besides the drugs, police also seized various foreign currencies worth RM900,000, nine luxury watches and jewellery.
"We believe the drugs were meant to be distributed in the local market, Thailand, Singapore and Indonesia," he said.
All suspects have been remanded for seven days and the case is being investigated under Section 39B Dangerous Drugs Act 1952
Meanwhile, Mokhtar said the department seized a total of RM28 million worth of drugs between Jan 1 and March 2 this year.
